The Main attractions for a cockroach include food, water and shelter. To them, almost anything is food, including any foodstuff, paper, cloth, plants, and even glue used for binding books. They can be found in every part of the home, but most prefer some kind of damp environment. Since most cockroaches are active at night, many people may be completely unaware of their presence in their home. Cockroaches may be a public health concern in certain locations such as restaurants or hospitals because they have been known to carry Salmonella bacteria - the organism responsible for food poisoning.
Bed bugs are small, flat, oval bloodsucking insects that infest the sleeping quarters of man and other animals. Their presence is not necessarily the result of poor housekeeping, since these insects may be brought into a home in spite of all reasonable precautions. if introduced into a home, they may become very numerous and irritating, and affect the welfare of the occupants. They may pose problems in homes, hotels, theatres, barns, poultry houses, and in buildings housing rabbits or other warm blooded animals and birds.
Despite appearances spiders are not insects but are classified as Arachnida. Most of the spiders in the home become active only at night, and usually remain unnoticed in cool, dark corners. They very rarely bite unless molested. Large office or apartment buildings often attract a variety of spiders and can have heavy infestations. This is a result of lights in the large windows which attract nocturnal insects upon which the spiders feed.
The females of the species possess a stinger. Only honey bees have barbed stingers which can only be used once: other bees and wasps have barb-less stingers which enable them to sting repeatedly. Bees, wasps and hornets are in most respects beneficial insects. When they make their nests close to or within homes or other human-occupied buildings, however, a hazardous situation arises.
Domestic flies can be a nuisance and are also identified with the transfer of disease. Pathogenic organisms can be transferred by domestic flies, especially the House fly, where faecal matter, vomit-us (drops of regurgitated liquid) and bacteria adhering to the fly are deposited on human food or food preparation areas. Most species of fly are attracted to decaying matter.
Rats and mice are often called commensal rodents because they benefit from their proximity to humans. Rodents are pests because of the damage they cause to food and property, and because of the many serious diseases associated with them. Rodents can gnaw through electrical cables resulting in structural fires. They also have a major role in the spread of diseases such as salmonellosis, ricketsial pox and lymphatic choriomeningitis. Contamination of human food and animal feed with rodent droppings and urine is also a health concern. Parasites such as fleas and mites that are associated with rodents can also attack humans resulting in disease transmission. Recent health concerns have also been seen with the white-footed mouse which acts as a reservoir fro the Lyme disease bacterial spirochaete and the Hanta Virus.
The raccoon is a highly intelligent carnivore that is related to bears and the giant panda. Generally it is active only at night, and may become a nuisance in suburban areas when it raids garbage cans for food. It has few natural enemies except for the bobcat, fox and coyote. The raccoon is omnivorous, feeding upon fish, frogs, small mammals, birds and their eggs, molluscs, crustaceans, fruits, nuts, small grains and corn in storage and in fields. The slender toes on it's front feet are used with great dexterity in grasping small objects and in searching for food.
Fleas can be a real nuisance. They jump up to 3 feet and bite leaving irritating marks, typically on the legs, feet and arms.
